A Tricky Cottonwood In Ashland

A Tricky Cottonwood In Ashland

A homeowner in Ashland had a cottonwood in their back yard that was half dead. It was a small lot. They were concerned about it coming down on their home or their neighbors property. And they definitely didn’t want it falling on the railroad tracks behind the tree. Felling the tree from the ground was

I got a call from a family up Thompson Creek Rd in the Applegate on a Sunday morning. A large black oak had fallen during a storm. They were out of town but had a house sitter taking care of their animals. The oak just about took out their car as well as the mother-in-law

About Us

Meet Owens Ryon, your friendly neighborhood arborist.

I’m Owens Ryon. Phoenix Sun Tree Care is named after my son, Phoenix. It’s rooted in the things that matter to me: honesty, integrity, and a deep respect for trees.

I’ve been working with trees for over 15 years. I believe trees deserve better than rushed cuts and quick fixes, so I focus on long-term health, clean work, and advice you can trust.

I won’t sell you work you don’t need. If I think a tree’s better left alone, I’ll tell you. And if something needs to come down, I’ll make sure it’s done safely and with respect for your land.

My goal is simple: to leave every tree, and every property, better than I found it. And yes, I’ll literally go out on a limb to make that happen.

Free On-Site Consults

We’ll come walk the land with you, look at the trees, and talk through options. No pressure, no charge.

Fair, Upfront Pricing

I’ll give you a firm price whenever possible. If the scope changes once we’re up in the tree, I’ll let you know before doing extra work so there are no surprise charges.

Meticulous Cleanup

We don’t leave limbs, ruts, or brush piles behind. When we leave, your place looks better, not worse.

Small Crew, Neighborhood Friendly

We’re not a big outfit. Just a tight, local crew that works steady, respects your space, and doesn’t clog up the street.

Climb by Default

We climb whenever it makes sense because it protects your property from getting chewed up by heavy equipment. For jobs that need a bucket truck, we’ll call one in. We choose the right method for each tree.

Low Impact Methods

We climb trees, rope down branches, and avoid big machines whenever possible. This protects your soil, roots, and the rest of your landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of tree work do you specialize in?

We focus on thoughtful pruning, hazard removals, and land stewardship. Whether it’s a delicate Japanese maple or a dead fir leaning toward your home, we approach each job with care and long-term thinking.

What is fuels reduction, and how do you do it?

Fuels reduction is the process of thinning overgrown forests to reduce fire risk. We don’t use a masticator and the typical cut, pile, and burn protocol. Instead, our approach avoids waste and keeps useful material on-site when possible (firewood, soil-building, etc.). We work with landowners who care about long-term stewardship, not just quick clearing. Learn more about our fuels reduction + forest tending approach.

What makes a tree dangerous, and when should I worry?

If a tree is leaning heavily, has many dead or dying branches, has severe cracking or root issues, it will likely need attention. We assess each situation honestly. Sometimes removal is necessary. Sometimes a careful pruning is enough. We’ll tell you what we’d do as if it were our home, and carry it out safely, skillfully, and with minimal disruption.

Do you do detail work like shaping Japanese maples?

Yes, this is one of our specialties. We prune Japanese maples, pines, and other ornamental trees with balance and care. We use sharp, sanitized tools and a precise eye. If you’re maintaining a mature tree or restoring an overgrown one, we prune with beauty and long-term tree health in mind.

Can you help me revive my fruit trees?

Absolutely. I’ve been pruning fruit trees for over 15 years and know how to boost production and guide growth on apples, pears, plums, peaches, cherries, grapes and more. If your trees have been neglected, I’ll bring them back slowly and purposefully, with the long-term in mind.

I manage rental properties. Can you work with me?

Yes. We work with property managers who need responsive, reliable tree care. We show up, follow through, and leave the site clean. Tenants appreciate the quiet, respectful work. Owners appreciate not having to think about it again. We provide bids quickly and communicate clearly throughout.

Do you offer emergency tree services?

Yes, especially after storms. We respond quickly to clear hazardous trees and help you feel safe again. If a downed tree is blocking your driveway or leaning near your roof, we’ll assess it fast and start work as soon as we can. Learn more about our emergency tree services.

What areas do you serve?

We’re based in Grants Pass, Oregon and serve the surrounding areas of Josephine and Jackson Counties. We have clients in Grants Pass, Medford, Ashland, Jacksonville, Applegate, Williams and beyond. If you’re not sure you’re in our range, just reach out — if we can’t help, we’ll try to refer you to someone who can.

How soon can you come take a look?

Usually within a few days, though sometimes sooner, and definitely within one week. After you reach out, we’ll set up a free on-site consult where we’ll walk the land, look at your trees, and talk through options together.
