Or it can drop a branch on your car next Tuesday. Hard to know which until an expert looks at it.
We assess trees throughout Southern Oregon for structural problems such as split trunks, broken branches, decay, dangerous lean, root failure, and crown decline.
We also see storm damage, bark beetle infestations, drought-stressed Douglas-firs, wind damage, and trees that impact the defensible space around your home.
The assessment is free. If your tree needs removal, we’ll explain why and do it safely. If it doesn’t, we’ll tell you that too. We handle both planned removals and emergency work after winter storms.

Which Trees on Your Property Are Actually Dangerous?
Not every problem means removal. Sometimes targeted pruning or treatment works. But certain conditions make trees unsafe, and Southern Oregon’s drought, bark beetles, and wildfire risk create unique challenges.
Signs Your Tree May Need Removal:
Structural Problems
- Severe lean, especially new or increasing lean toward structures
- Large cracks in the trunk, vertical splits going deep into the wood
- Co-dominant stems, two main trunks splitting from the same point with bark trapped between them
- Cavities or hollow areas, openings showing internal decay
- Missing or peeling bark, though healthy Madrones do this!
Dead or Dying Trees
- No leaves or needles when neighboring trees look healthy
- Brittle, dry branches that snap easily
- Extensive dead branches: more than 50% of the crown
- Mushrooms or conks on the trunk: shelf-like fungal growths may indicate rot
Root and Base Problems
- Soil mounding or cracking near the base
- Exposed or lifting roots
- Construction damage
Storm Damage
- Hanging or broken branches (widow-makers)
- Split or cracked trunk
- Partially uprooted tree, roots exposed but still standing
- Lightning strike damage

Our process
How We Handle Hazard Tree Removal
Most tree work is pretty straightforward. You’re concerned about a tree. I come look. We figure out if it needs to come down. If it does, I remove it safely. Here’s what that actually looks like:
I Start by Looking
I do some laps around the tree, really getting a sense of what needs to happen. Is the top dying? Roots coming up? How’s the lean? I look at the species — some trees are more brittle than others, some are prone to hollowing out. I check what’s underneath — your house, your car, where people spend time.
Then I give you my take. Sometimes I’ll say, “If it was my house, I wouldn’t worry about it.” Sometimes I’ll say, “Yeah, that would concern me too.” I can never guarantee what a tree will do, but I’ll tell you what I see and what I think.
We Talk Through Options
Sometimes the tree doesn’t need to come down at all — maybe we just prune off the dead limb that’s worrying you. Maybe we reduce weight on that heavy horizontal branch over your patio. If pruning solves the problem, I’ll recommend that instead of removal. But if removal is the safest call, I’ll explain why.
More often than not, people don’t want a ton of detail. They just want to know: is this tree safe or not? I keep it simple.
Then We Do the Work
If we’re removing it, I plan out the safest approach. I climb, set ropes, work through the tree section by section. Sometimes I use two ropes to control how branches come down. It’s physical, it requires focus, and honestly I enjoy the challenge. The goal is always the same: remove the tree safely without tearing up your property.
We Clean Up Completely
We can haul everything away; or, if the situation allows, we can leave you with wood chips for your property or a stack of firewood. Either way, you won’t have a mess to deal with or wonder what just happened.
