Tree Removal Permits and Rules in Ashland
Ashland’s permit rules are more specific than you might realize, but they’re not as restrictive as they sound for the average homeowner.
On a standard single-family lot, you can usually remove trees without a permit. The exceptions are trees in the right-of-way, trees on steep slopes or near creeks and wetlands, and trees that were protected under a prior planning decision for your property.
Different rules apply to commercial, employment, and multi-family properties. Permits are required there for any removal over 6 inches DBH. On vacant single-family land, the threshold is 18 inches DBH.
One rule applies to every property in town: topping a tree always requires a permit. The city’s position on topping is clear, and it matches ours.
Pacific Power requires 10 feet of clearance around primary lines. That work goes through them, not us, but we can help you coordinate.

Wildfire, Almeda, and What Ashland Homeowners Should Know
The Almeda Fire started near the north end of Ashland on September 8, 2020, and burned nine miles north through Talent, Phoenix, and into south Medford before it was done. Most people in Ashland know the story. A lot of them think about it differently now when they look at the trees on their property.
The hillside neighborhoods above town — Oak Knoll, Strawberry Lane, the areas near the watershed — carry meaningfully higher fire exposure than the valley floor. If your property sits up there, defensible space is worth taking seriously.

Do you work near Pacific Power lines?
We work around lines regularly, but work on or within the utility easement is Pacific Power’s jurisdiction. If your tree is growing into primary lines, we’ll let you know what we can safely handle and when you need to contact Pacific Power directly.
Do you work on pear trees and other fruit trees?
Yes, and it’s work we enjoy. Medford has a long history with pears, and a lot of residential lots still carry that legacy. Fine pruning on fruit trees and ornamentals is different from general trimming. It takes patience and an understanding of how the tree grows. That’s something we take seriously.
